The Last Letter From a Father

Dear Prudence,     Today was your 8th birthday and you grow more beautiful every time I see you. Your mother was the most beautiful woman I’ve ever known,  and I think your beauty will surpass hers one day. My heart aches seeing you grow; your eyes, your smile, your hair, everything about you makes me think of your mother. I can’t continue without her, today after listening to you laugh and looking at your smile I’ve made my mind up. I’m sorry I couldn’t be more of what you deserved. It’s probably best if you forget me. Goodbye.

A Tale of Revenge: Part One

There once was a man, who thought he was grand.  His better came along to help him understand.  Riding on coat tails only gets you so far.  Before you’re freeloading ways meet their eventual bar.  “You thought you were smart, stealing my work.  Then I found out.” She said with a smirk.  “You’ve clearly no honor; you’ve clearly no class. Your dreams of infamy and stardom are now shattered like glass.” The man was shocked. He thought his plan couldn’t fail.    The nerve of this woman was beyond the pale.  This pairs’ story is far from through. We will continue the journey in, “A Tale of Revenge: Part Two”.

Nothing But a Whore

July 31st, 1987 "Listen bitch, I'm not paying for your worthless ass again. You're nothing but a whore with a cock. Pull up that dress and give me what I want," a man growled from down the alley. Anthony started down the poorly lit trash strewn alley way. " Got off of me!" he heard a women cry and gasp in pain as she was struck by a fist to her face. "Hands up and back away from the women," Anthony yelled to the man. "Who the fuck are you?" the man angrily questioned. "The police. Now get the fuck out of here before I take you to the station for assault," Anthony replied. He spat at Anthony's feet, zipped his pants, and stalked away. " I suppose you plan on taking me to the station instead," sneered the bleeding woman. "You were the one who was assaulted and is bleeding," Anthony stated matter of factly. "No, I have no intention of taking you to the station. I'm detective Anthony Pellecano. May

Eyes Wide with Panic and Cocaine

Once again, Tic had snuck out of the house on a Friday right after school with his best mates Izzie and Stella. His Mom would be mad he is missing lunch, but he just had too much energy to stay home. It had been a beautiful day and he felt cooped up - it was warm and none of them had anywhere to be. The afternoon sun was setting as they walked out of the piercing shop where they had all three been on the receiving end of a piercing needle, this time was another lip ring for Tic - “Fuck, my Da’s going to mad about this one!” Tic said to Izzie. Izzie just smiled that big smile of crooked teeth he has and said “at leas’ yo’re Da will facking notice” he said as he reached up to touch the end of his sore nose that now sported a new piece of metal glinting in the sun. Stella, who had just had her tongue pierced said, “give me that juth” as she grabbed the flask from Tic. Her tongue had clearly swollen which made it hard for her to talk, but she took a good long swig anyway and swirled it aro

Fourth Course: Meat

It’s not the dish, but the hunger that drives this course. An evening promised by the aroma of red meat: Your guests crave the bloody dream promised by your chef. Satisfy them. . . .

Third Course: Whole Poached Fish

Be gentle... you needn’t add anything to draw out their subtle flavors. You only have to take them out of their environment and pack them in salt and light heat. “I think she likes you.” Liam almost-shouted across the VIP booth. A lifetime of nights in places with table service and women who could calculate your net worth within a quid had trained him to be heard while he spoke in a normal voice. Mr.  (no title) George, the Director of Loans Coordination at the British Museum didn’t seem to hear Liam, but he behaved as Liam wanted. Every time a girl poured a round of vodka for the table and touched his wrist, the Director pretended he’d been coming to clubs all his life. “You must meet the DJ!” Liam grabbed  Mister  George’s arm and pulled him out of the safety of the VIP table and directly into the crowd. “Street art  is the future!” Liam waited until they were well within the crowd and then disappeared. Twenty minutes later, a blank-eyed Mister George found him near the vestibule. Li

Second Course: Watercress Soup

Expand on the first taste. You don’t need to rush to bring this course together... it’s a tease, often with a bit of salt. The afternoon sun had finally found the angle it needed to pierce Liam’s curtains. Awful nuisance. Doesn’t belong here. Liam left the sunlight - and his bed - behind.   Liam pulled out his best suit - not good enough, we’ll need to stop at Seville Row - and only then realized he was naked and hard.  He dreamed of Her at night, saw Her and saw the disorder of the world when he woke. So disorderly. No wonder she rarely deigned to visit this vulgar city.  Liam was grinning as he jumped into his car. There was  so much  in the world he could fix for her.  First stop: The family lawyer. “Everything to your satisfaction?” the obsequious clerk who drew up the purchase of Liam’s flat asked.  Liam dropped a file on the clerk’s desk, much larger than the papers for his flat. “And then some! W e’ve developed an appetite for property,” Liam happily replied in a chummy voice. H

The Smell of Disaster

The air in London is changing; I can smell it. As autumn thickens the city sky with fog and rain, I can sense a looming cloud gathering.  I can't see it, but I know it's there.   I've had this feeling before, and it never plays out well. It's a scent I've come to recognize as impending disaster, an outpouring of suffering that sprays from the earth like blood from an arterial wound. It means there will be chaos. It means there will be pain.  Like the smell of decay draws flies and and carrion crawlers, this encroaching doom attracts things darker even than my kind. Shadow-winged and owl-eyed, these beings beyond death seem to flock when large numbers of people are about to suffer.  I've only encountered a few in my long night, but each time I have felt a dread I never knew in my breathing days.  The city's pulse quickens. I watch the living scurry through each night, and as the life they carry quickens my child flesh, I am reminded of how fragile it all is.

What Happens?

October 31st, 1986 "Tony, put the files down and come and watch a movie with me!", Tristan yelled to Anthony from the living room. "Give me 15 minutes. I'm reading through case notes,' Anthony replied distractedly. Tristan appeared in the dining room and grabbed the file out of Anthony's hand gently. "Babe, you are always working on a case. It's Halloween! Let's enjoy it together. You can read the notes after the movie." Tristan kissed Anthony and led him to the couch. "Wanna watch a horror movie?" Tristan asked. Anthony replied with a deadpan look. "Tristan, I live horror all day everyday," he points to himself." Homicide detective remember.....wo go through this every year for the past  years." He pretended to scowl. "Okay okay Ghost Busters it is," he chuckled and slid the VHS into the VCR then cuddled into Anthony. "Do you believe?" Tristan asked after the movie ended. "Do I believe

The Thoughts are Always There

Edinburgh, Scotland, United Kingdom 1953           Vanessa and her parents were on holiday visiting family.   After a trip to Edinburgh castle Vanessa’s mother took her by her hand and sat her down.   She explained that there were a lot of things in the world that would try to keep her down, but as long as she persevered and ignored them that she could accomplish anything she put her mind to.   As her mother worked on building young Vanessa’s self-esteem up, her inner voice spoke up, “There is a gold coin lying under the dresser in the corner.”   Vanessa thought in her mind.   “Just take it no one will notice.”   She thought again.   “If you get caught you can always blame it on someone else.”     Margarita, Boarding School- outside the girl’s dormitory 1962           “Vanessa, come on and finish your good-byes your father and I want to make sure we get on the road before its too late so we can have supper!”   Vanessa’s mother called from the passenger door
