First Course: Gougères

Light as air, you know they’re real because you crave the next bite.

Liam’s oxfords crunched through a thin layer of fresh snow as he walked up the steps to his family’s home.

He didn’t remember snow tonight. This time of year? He looked down to see crisp autumn leaves piled up under each brick stair. He still saw ashy gray snow, but now smelled pollen on the air. Why was the family’s house always so filthy? Why weren’t they as pristine as Hers?

It was late, and Titan was snuffing and padding behind the front door.

Liam crunched over the detritus on the stoop and inside, a cursory pat for Titan.

Father would be waiting up for him.

Like Titan.

Liam endured Father’s pathetic display of emotion.

Then Liam went upstairs and began to move Father’s things into a smaller room, more befitting his station.

Titan was a big dog and needed a proper room, after all.
